"What it comes down to is the churches are not acting like instruments of love. They're hate machines. They're ignorance factories."
-Sean Penn, Rolling Stone, February 2009 issue (A quote regarding the Prop 8 issue).
I want to know, is this quote true today, more often than not?
P.S. Is it the church's job (or right) to tell people who they can or cannot marry? If the end goal is change, how does merely restricting someone against their will help anything? Is it anyone's right to decide who needs to change?
How does any of this fit in with the idea of being instruments of love?

I have very similar thoughts, and strong opinions on the subject :), because of which I voted against making homosexual marriage illegal. It passed anyways, though, and the following day the front page of the newspaper had a picture of a group of Christians holding hands and crying when they heard the news that Prop 8 passed, to ban homosexual marriage. Really?? Are you serious? That's what the church made headline news about.
